Client’s Challenge
We partnered with WWF to develop an intelligent system that automatically recognizes oxbow lakes, which are critical to river ecosystem protection. This was the first attempt to map all oxbows in Poland using AI, with the goal of streamlining conservation efforts. The main challenge was the lack of labeled data, requiring significant effort to build a reliable training dataset.
Our Solution
We developed an automated method for identifying oxbows by analyzing shape and location data. Using ResNet for image vectorization and combining it with metadata like size and location, the system successfully classified oxbows using standard classification techniques.
Client’s Benefits
The system replaced the manual identification process, reducing months of work to just a few hours. It efficiently analyzed large datasets and distinguished oxbows from other natural and artificial water bodies, significantly accelerating efforts to preserve river ecosystems and biodiversity.
