Client’s Challenge

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) sought a method to automatically identify individual North Atlantic right whales in aerial imagery. Automating this process was crucial to help marine biologists and conservationists track endangered species populations efficiently.

Our Solution

NOAA hosted an online competition via Kaggle, inviting AI teams worldwide to submit their best models. deepsense.ai won the competition, significantly outperforming all other entries. Following the win, deepsense.ai developed and integrated an end-to-end whale identification service into NOAA’s existing software stack.

Client’s Benefits

This AI-powered solution drastically improved researchers’ ability to track endangered marine mammals, reducing image analysis time by 98% and providing vital insights into whale behavior and population dynamics.
